Pointillism Portrait

Pointillism Portrait

November 1, 2010

This drawing was made using a stippling technique in felt tip pen. Lending itself to this process, a very grainy, high contrast image was used as a subject. The small, distinct dots were applied in patterns with varying densities. The technique relies on the “filling-in” phenomenon, the ability of the viewer’s brain to fill in the gaps of what the eye does not see (in this case, blending the dots into differing shades and shapes to form an image). Using a pen required precision down to each and every dot; no mistake could be erased.
