Handcrafted Type Collage

Handcrafted Type Collage

September 1, 2011

Individual letter forms boast finely crafted and unique characteristics that are often taken for granted. The aim of this project was to fine tune my awareness and appreciation of typography by cropping and composing type designs using individual letters, each one photocopied and manipulated by hand. Each of the 36 designs is contained in a 3.5″ by 3.5″ square assembled into three sets, and within a set no letter form is repeated. When placement was complete, the designs were re-scanned and printed as seamless squares. Precision was crucial in this painstakingly detailed process that serves to enlighten modern computer users to the old methods of typographic handling.
